The Roque Gameiro Watercolour Museum, in Minde, is the only museum in the country entirely dedicated to watercolours and to the work of Alfredo Roque Gameiro. It is a member of the Portuguese Museums Network since 2019.
Both the museum and the workshop dedicated to the practice and study of watercolours are located at Casa dos Açores, a remarkable sample of early 20th century architecture and gardens that was innovating at the time. The museum’s collection comprises drawings and watercolours, which means there’s a rotation of works on display for conservation reasons. This exhibition is part of an annual programme dedicated to the illustrations Roque Gameiro made for the first edition of As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor.
There’s humility and worship towards creation in the work of Roque Gameiro, which transpires in several details and provides each object with a unique strength, turning his portraits, for instance, into some of the highlights of Portuguese painting, as in the case of Portrait of His Mother.
